Australian Dance Theatre

The Australian Dance Theatre is a contemporary dance company based in Adelaide, South Australia.

Australian Dance Theatre is one of the influential dance companies in Australia. It was formed in Adelaide in 1965 by Elizabeth Cameron Dalman. In Dalman's words, the company was created to 'open the horizons for provocative contemporary and cutting edge dance' and Dalman aimed to provide opportunities for Australian artists to collaborate in the production of new work. In 1977 in came under the directorship of Jonothan Taylor.In 1986 Anthony Steel from the Adelaide Festival and ADT dancer Lenny Westerdijk jointly directed the company while a new director was looked for In 1987 Leigh Warren was appointed as the Artisitic Director. Then in 1993 a new director came on board, Meryl Tankard. The company changed its name to Meryl Tankard Australian Dance Theatre. Following disputes with the company Meryl left in 1999 and Gary Stewart was appointed.

Directors have included Leigh Warren (now with Leigh Warren & Dancers) and Meryl Tankard
