Austin Coates

Austin Coates, (1922 - 1997), was a British writer who lived most of his adult life in Asia.

Austin Coates was the son of noted English composer Eric Coates.

In Hong Kong, Austin Coates was a Special Magistrate in the New Territories in the 1950s. He travelled widely throughout India and the Far East.

About 1944, Coates travelled in India and befriended Jamini Roy (1887-1972), an Indian painter. Coates supported, promoted, and collected his works.
