Audrey (Fawlty Towers)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Audrey is a fictional unseen character in the popular BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers.

[edit] Character Background

Audrey is Sybil Fawlty's lifelong best friend, and mostly appears in the form of gossiping telephone calls to Sybil, which Basil mocks heartily from time to time.

Audrey is used as a source of refuge for Sybil from the hotel and from Basil's ludicrous situations. When times get tough for Audrey (she has a dysfunctional relationship with her husband George, who often leaves her), Sybil will offer solutions and guidance, often resulting in the infamous catchphrase ooh, I know... - when Mrs. Fawlty tries to understand her problems.

Audrey had one onscreen appearance in The Anniversary, where she was played by actress Christine Shaw. She had some significance in The Hotel Inspectors, where she passed on the information that hotel inspectors were in Torquay, resulting in the only time that Basil saw that she had any significance. Her other notable off-screen appearances include: The Wedding Party, Gourmet Night, The Psychiatrist and The Kipper and the Corpse
