Atlanta is a city in Cass County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,745.

Atlanta is located at 33°7′6″N, 94°9′60″W (33.118228, -94.166537)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.7 km² (11.1 mi²). 28.3 km² (10.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (1.17%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 5,745 people, 2,254 households, and 1,571 families residing in the city. The population density was 202.9/km² (525.4/mi²). There were 2,556 housing units at an average density of 90.3/km² (233.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 68.13% White, 29.23% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.72% of the population.

There were 2,254 households out of which 32.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 18.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,188, and the median income for a family was $32,679. Males had a median income of $29,286 versus $19,715 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,013. About 19.0% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.4% of those under age 18 and 19.4% of those age 65 or over.

Bessie Coleman: Born and raised in Atlanta, she was the world's first female African-American licensed aviator.

Ellen DeGeneres: The popular TV talk show host and comedian moved to the city from New Orleans, Louisiana as a teenager and graduated from Atlanta High School in 1976.

Tracy Lawrence: Country Music star born in Atlanta and raised in Foreman, Arkansas.

Danny Barr: Born and raised in Atlanta, Col. Barr was the pilot of Air Force One from 1989-1997 (Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton). He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1968 and is the brother of Johnny Barr.

Johnny Barr: Longtime college football coach and currently the Director of On-Campus Recruiting for Texas A&M University. He is a 1966 graduate of Atlanta High School. He is the brother of Danny Barr.

Ted Thompson: Executive Vice-President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1971.

Kevin Rahm: Actor and regular on Judging Amy. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1989.

Drew Stubbs: Drafted 8th in the first round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He was a 3-year starter as center fielder for the University of Texas. Drew helped lead the Longhorns to a National Championship in 2005. He is currently playing in the minor leagues. Drew graduated from Atlanta High School in 2003.
