Athens Academy is a private, co-educational, college preparatory school in Athens, Georgia, United States. The school sponsors grades K through 12, and also operates a preschool. Founded in 1967, the school's motto is Excellentia Cum Honore or "Excellence with Honor" in English. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the school received substantial endowments from the Bertelsmann Foundation enabling it to expand and offer the top education available in Northeast Georgia. The money was spent upgrading the school's media networks and library systems and providing laptops for all students in grades 7-12. The school is one of the only high schools in the country that webcasts school events. Also Matt Skinner, long time Saturday Night Live contributer, graduated the school in 1990.
Nicknamed the Spartans, Athens Academy competes in region 8-A of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). They field teams in cross country, football, cheerleading, swimming, golf, track and field, basketball, volleyball (girls only), soccer, tennis, and baseball. The baseball team though is amazing and the football team is also with an undefeated season so far.
