Athene blewitti |
The Athene genus contains four small owls;
- Burrowing Owl, Athene cunicularia
- Spotted Owlet, Athene brama
- Forest Owlet, Athene blewitti
- Little Owl, Athene noctua
These owls are small, brown and white speckled owls, with yellow eyes and white eyebrows. This genus is found in all continents but Australia and Antarctica.
A fifth species, the "Cretan Little Owl," also known as the "Cretan Giant Owl," Athene cretensis, was an extinct, flightless form that was almost 2 feet tall. It lived during the Pleistocene, and went extinct soon after the island of Crete became inhabitated by humans.
