Atchison Village, Richmond, California

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Atchison Village in Richmond, California was originally built to house defense industry workers during World War II. It includes 97 one story buildings and 65 two story buildings. Adjascent Atchison Village Annex has 50 one story duplexes.

In 1956 the village was sold to its residents for $1.5 million and it remains a housing cooperative to this day. Today units generally cost between $50,000 to $70,000. Their low price is largely attributed to the fact that the property is not transferred, making it difficult to take out a loan to buy a unit.

The entire neighborhood is on the national registrar of historic places and is part of the Rosie the Rivter/WWII Homefront National Historic Monument.

[edit] Location

Atchison Village is located in the Iron Triangle. Although this area is known as the highest crime area of Richmond, within Atchison Village the crime rate is actually fairly low. Part of this reason are the gates that separate it from the greater Iron Triangle community.

[edit] Shootings

In November 2006, there were two outdoor drug-related shootings in Atchison Village on two consecutive weekends. One of the gunmen was arrested and found to be only 13 years old. Mayor-elect Gayle McLaughlin endorsed the idea of a "beat cop" to be assigned to the Village at a subsequent resident meeting about violence in the neighborhood.[1]
