[edit] Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages
Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages, nicknamed "SWBYP'S" (pronounced swa-bips), was formed in 1984 upon the breakup of AT&T. SWBYP'S also referred to the following publishing/advertising companies of Southwestern Bell Corp./SBC Communications:
- Southwestern Bell Advertising Group, Inc. - Advertising division of Southwestern Bell Corp.
- Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages, Inc.
- Southwestern Bell Advertising, L.P. - assembled ads, listings for telephone books
- Worldwide Directory Products Sales, Inc. - Distributors of telephone books
In 1995, Southwestern Bell Corp. changed its name to SBC Communications, and SWBYP'S was largely unaffected. In 1999, SBC completed its acquisition of Pacific Telesis, Ameritech, and SNET, and added "SBC" branding to its companies. The SWBYP'S nickname went by the wayside, in favor of Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages. The last year SWBYP'S were branded Southwestern Bell came in 2001, when "SBC" was added to the company names SBC owned, and SWBYP'S became known as SBC Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages.
[edit] Pacific Bell Directory
Pacific Bell Directory Holdings was the advertising/publishing division of the Pacific Telesis Group. PBD Holdings held Pacific Bell Directory under its umbrella, who published directories in both Nevada & California.
Pacific Bell Directory yellow pages were nicknamed the SMART Yellow Pages. The SMART name was retained when yellow pages were branded "Pacific Bell" and "Nevada Bell".
[edit] SNET Information Services
SNET Information Services, Inc. was the directory operations subsidiary of Southern New England Telecommunications Corp. SNETIS published directories only in Connecticut in SNET service areas.
[edit] Ameritech Publishing
Ameritech Publishing, Inc. published telephone directories in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Prior to brand standardization by SBC Communications, Ameritech directories were published under the PagesPlus brand.
Ameritech Publishing's operations in Illinois and northwest Indiana were placed in a partnership with RH Donnelley, called DonTech, in 1999.
[edit] SBC Yellow Pages
In 2002, SBC Communications dropped its Bell Operating Company names altogether, using a unified "SBC" brand. As a result, the yellow pages operations took on the "SMART Yellow Pages" brand, retained from Pacific Bell Directory.
Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages, Inc. became the "flagship" division of SBC Yellow Pages, with Southwestern Bell Yellow Pages headquarters becoming central headquarters for all SBC Yellow Pages operations in St. Louis, MO.
In 2004, SBC sold complete control of its joint venture with RH Donnelley, DonTech, to RH Donnelley. Telephone directories formerly published by SBC now became known as SBC Yellow Pages Published by RH Donnelley, and RH Donnelley's Illinois operations for SBC became known as the Advertising of Illinois Partnership. SBC merges Southwestern Bell Advertising, L.P. with Pacific Bell Directory's advertising division, creating SBC Advertising, L.P. As a result, "SMART" is eliminated as a nickname for all of the yellow pages operations, becoming simply SBC Yellow Pages.
[edit] AT&T Yellow Pages
In 2005, SBC completed its acquisition of AT&T Corp., and renamed itself AT&T Inc. As a result, SBC Yellow Pages was renamed AT&T Yellow Pages, and the Illinois edition was renamed "AT&T Yellow Pages Published by RH Donnelley".
Central operations for AT&T Yellow Pages are located in St. Louis, MO at One AT&T Center.
