AT&T Laboratories, Inc. is the research & development arm of American telecommunications giant, AT&T.

AT&T Labs, the name, originated in 1996, when AT&T spun-off most of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Inc. into Lucent Technologies, who then used the Bell Labs name for its R&D functions. Areas focusing on computer and communications science were retained by AT&T as the retitled 'AT&T Laboratories'. In 1999 AT&T Labs acquired the Olivetti Research Laboratory in Cambridge, England.

SBC Laboratories, Inc. was founded in 1988 as the research and development division of SBC Communications, Inc.
[edit] The New AT&T Labs
In 2005, SBC Communications and AT&T Corp. merged to form AT&T Inc., "The New AT&T". AT&T Laboratories, Inc. became the new name of the combination of the original AT&T Laboratories and SBC Laboratories.
