Asyut Governorate

Asyut or Assiut (Arabic: أسيوط ) is one of the governorates of Egypt. It stretches for about 120Km along the banks of the Nile. The capital of the governorate of Asyut is the city of Asyut.

  • Population: around 2.9 million (Male population: 1.5 million or 51.21%; Female population: 1.4 million or 48.79%).
  • Population density: 1840 people/Km².
  • Rural population: 2.1 million; urban population: 0.6 million.
  • Percentage to the whole population of Egypt: 4.82%.
  • Population growth rate: 2.6% per year.
  • Assiut Governorate administrative divisions: 10 localities, 2 districts, 50 local administrative units, 185 small villages, 883 tiny villages.

Other historical sites in the governorate of Asyut include the Ancient Egyptian tombs of Meer, and the town of Doronka which is a pilgrimage site for many Copts who come to visit a site dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
