NASA's Astronaut Group 5 (the 'Original 19') selected by NASA in April 1966.
- First joint US-USSR mission. Flew on Apollo-Soyuz, STS-5, STS-41-B, and STS-35. Selected in 1973 to fly on Skylab Rescue if necessary; that mission was not flown.
- Lunar Module Pilot, fifth manned lunar landing. Tenth man to walk on the moon. Flew on Apollo 16.
- Command Module Pilot, last manned lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 17.
- Lunar Module Pilot, aborted lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 13 and Shuttle Enterprise for Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT)
- Lunar Module Pilot, fourth manned lunar landing. Eighth man to walk on the moon. Flew on Apollo 15.
- Physicist. Most sources indicate he was a candidate for the cancelled Apollo 20. Selected in 1973 to fly on Skylab Rescue if necessary; the mission was never flown. Finally flew on STS-51-B in 1985, having waited 19 years, longer than any other American astronaut, to fly his first mission.
- Command Module Pilot, fifth manned lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 16.
- First untethered EVA.
- Lunar Module Pilot, third manned lunar landing. Sixth man to walk on the moon. Flew on Apollo 14.
- Command Module Pilot, third manned lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 14.
- Command Module Pilot, aborted lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 13.
- Command Module Pilot, fourth manned lunar landing. Flew on Apollo 15.
