Astley Hall is a former stately home near Chorley in Lancashire, England.
It is set in Astley Park, the largest park in Chorley and stands next to an ornamental lake. Built in the mid 1500's both the house and its Art Gallery are open to the public. There is fine oak furniture, Flemish tapestries and wooden panelling. The plaster ceilings in the Great Hall and Withdrawing Room are almost unique and demonstrate the wealth of the families responsible for building this magnificent hall.
There are many stories of ghostly happenings and the Hall has various events throughout the winter months.
It is rumoured that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Hall during the Battle of Preston in the 1600's and reportedly left his boots behind. However, recent research shows that these may not be his own boots, however this does not rule out him visiting the Hall. A wide range of temporary exhibitions are displayed in the art gallery throughout the season and a wide range of events are organised throughout the year.
Astley Hall is owned and administered by Chorley Borough Council. It was gifted to Chorley along with the surrounding park as a memorial to The First World War. Website www.chorley.gov.uk/astleyhall for further information.
