[edit] Discussion about this category's parent category, moved from user talk pages

I've noticed you added Category:Asian Americans to Category:American people by national origin. I'm not sure if that's the best categorization for this group because it IMHO suggests that members of that group are "straddling two nationalities". I'd like to understand your rationale for including Asian Americans, but not Category:African Americans. Please reply to my talk page. — J3ff 00:18, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I put this in Category:American people by national origin because of its by-nationality subcategories. I did think about moving Category:African Americans, but I don't think African American is (at this point) nationality based. I understand the parallelism between Asian Americans and African Americans, but I think there's a stronger tie with specific county of origin for Asians. We could keep category:Asian Americans under category:American people and add the by-nationality subcategories to Category:American people by national origin, but having them both there and in category:Asian Americans seems a little weird. -- Rick Block 01:48, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
The reason I feel that Asian Americans does not belong under "American people by national origin" is that I use the term as only a racial category like the term African American is used. Personally, as an Asian American born in the United States, I am not comfortable with the listing the way it is because I consider my nationality to be solely American. I consider my race to be Asian, and more specifically my ethnicity to be Chinese. I think the Asian Americans category should be moved back underneath "American people", unless you have a better solution. — J3ff 03:05, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Discussion moved here for posterity and for broader visibility. I think I'd like category:Chinese Americans (for example) to be reachable from category:American people by national origin. I don't think it's a particular problem for these categories to have two parents (both category:Asian Americans and category:American people by national origin) and for category:Asian Americans to be a direct subcategory of category:American people. -- Rick Block 03:27, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I think that's a good solution. I'm following through with that right now, I'm adding Category:Asian Americans to be under category:American people by national origin and Category:American people. — J3ff 03:40, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
What I meant was to have category:Asian Americans only under category:American people and to put the subcategories (like category:Chinese Americans) under both category:Asian Americans and category:American people by national origin. Would that be an improvement? -- Rick Block 04:55, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I think it's fine the way it is right now. — J3ff 01:03, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
