Asia District, Peru

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asia District is a part of Cañete Province, in Peru.

During the mid-seventies, the development of a beach district was taking place. Las Palmas was the first condominium to be developed. Los Cocos came right after, nevertheless it was the first one to have electricity. In the first years, water tanks had to be bought, due to the fact that there were no pipes linking these condominiums. As well, kerosene lamps had to be used. Soon, others were created and they expanded their territories home owners as time went by. Into the 1990s, with a decent number of "condominios," as they are known in Spanish, the Camino Real, which is the road that connects some of the beaches to the Panamerican Highway, had only a few businesses. These included Ibiza, a night club, Sur Market, the supermarket, and a few others. The following decade was the boom's cradle; the Boulevard that was home to the few businesses got bigger and bigger, enclosing a movie theater, many small shops and restaurants, and the big supermarket E. Wong.

The launching of the new E. Wong store in kilometer 97.5 of the Panamerican Highway was a big hit to the small supermarket, Los Tres Chanchitos, that was one of the first shops in the open-air mall. Statistics have shown that this store has the highest average ticket, in comparison to the stores in Lima. Everything the stores in Lima offer is offered in Asia, and more.

The Camino Real is now home to many more night clubs, these include: Juanito, Mai Tai, and others. Inside the open-air mall, there are more clubs as well, such as: La Huaka, and more expensive ones like Café del Mar and Bambuddha. The inner section of the commercial area now includes an array of businesses that offer everything one needs. There are 3 movie theaters, games for children, famous Peruvian restaurants, bars, sushi bars, etc.

[edit] The Beaches

As it was mentioned previously, one of the first beaches was Las Palmas. Many would say it was inspired by Mejía in Arequipa. This beach club, as it is also called, was born in the 1970s. Its success brought other people who were interested, and hence developed and built other beach condominiums. The district now encloses over 5,000 houses in over 30 condominiums. Nevertheless, the beach side of the district only works and is populated during the summer time, due to weather, and the lack of city characteristics.

[edit] The Other Side

Asia is also a distric that is home to many lower-income Peruvians. On the same kilometer the mall is on the Panamerican Highway, there are many lower budget stores and homes, which in fact do work the entire year, due to the fact that people do live in that part. Moving in to kilometer 103 approximately, there are bigger towns that house lower-income people as well.

[edit] Golf

Recent projects that have been under development are those for the golf court and condominium. It is being proposed by the Lima Golf Club from San Isidro in Lima and Playa el Golf. The area that will be used as the golf court is pure sand and dunes. Many members from the Lima Golf Club protested, since the project involves much money and two kinds and members, those who can use both clubs, and those who can only use the beach one.

[edit] Davis Cup

The Davis Cup for this region has been played in Asia. The most recent tournament was on February 2006.
