[edit] Junior State of America

The Junior State of America(JSA) is the largest student-run organization in the United States. Students organize every aspect of the organization, from the local chapter level to the multi-state level. The members elect leaders to organize JSA conventions, conferences, and political awareness events. Ashland's chapter is part of the Northeast State branch.

The JSA program includes debates, “thought talks”, problem solving, and a variety of simulations designed to provide members with an informed viewpoint and the ability to analyse important issues. JSA provides an opportunity to meet other students from outside their home communities who share similar interests.

Additionally, seperate events take place on a regional and/or national level. Most recently taking place for Ashland High's chapter was the Fall State convention. Other events include: Fall Regional, Winter Congress, Spring Regional, and Spring State, among others.

The current chapter president for Ashland High School is senior Bart Golub (who additionally holds the title of 'Mayor' for the New England Region (MA, VT, RI, ME, NH) of JSA).

[edit] Newspaper: AHS Forum

The official Ashland High School, Massachusetts, newspaper was first printed in the Fall of 2005. Its return came with the arrival of a new administration to the school, Principal Mr. Michael Tempesta and Assistant Principal Mr. Chris Cummings and the return of the history teacher Mr. Michael Wurster. Although the newspaper the “AHS Spirit” was cited in the previous edition of the handbook to be the school-sanctioned publication, it went out of use. Furthermore, former Principal Mrs. Cohen attempted to ban the “underground” newspaper the “Real Deal”, which still exists today.

“The AHS Forum” accepts articles from any student wishing to contribute. The hierarchy of its management is as follows: Managing Editors, Kyle Osborne and Judy Zhou; Junior Editors, Jessica Feng, Wendy Lei, and Erica Poole; Chief Photographer, Shaun Smith; and advisor, Michael Wurster. This list is partailly unofficial in that its management can change at any moment. It is current as of December, 2006.

It features a disclaimer:

“Please note: the articles and opinions put forth by the writers of The AHS Forum do not reflect those of the Managing Editors, Advisor, AHS Faculty and/or the AHS Administration”
