Ashes to Ashes (Voyager episode)

"Ashes to Ashes" is episode 18 from season 6 of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager. It first aired on March 1, 2000, and features the return of a deceased crew member.

An alien contacts Voyager and claims to be a deceased member of the crew (Ensign Lyndsay Ballard). She explains that an alien race (Kobali) reanimated her. The race reproduces by altering the DNA of dead individuals of other races. She escaped her new family to find Voyager.

The crew is skeptical at first but the doctor's scans confirm her story. Ballard decides to return to her old job in engineering and try to resume her old life. The doctor tries to restore her human form. Harry went to the academy with Lyndsay Ballard and rekindles his relationship with her. He confesses his love for her. Ballard has trouble getting used to her old life and can't even enjoy her favorite food. The Doctor's attempts to restore her human characteristics fail.

Things become complicated when her Kobali adoptive father comes for her. He demands to have his "daughter" back. At first Ballard refuses. But she soon realizes that her place is with the Kobali. She says goodbye to her old friends and returns with her new family.
