Asef-bayat

Asef Bayat (Ph.D., University of Kent 1984) is a professor of sociology and ISIM Academic Director, and the ISIM Chair at Leiden University. He was born in the north of Tehran, Iran.

He taught sociology and Middle East studies at the American University in Cairo. He has held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University and the University of Oxford.

Asef Bayat, professor of sociology, bound for the University of Leiden following 17 years at the American University in Cairo (AUC), breaks into laughter at the recollection of his first impressions of a Western politics of protest as a graduate student in Britain in the late 1970s (read in Alahram newspaper).
