Ascension is a jazz album by John Coltrane. It is often considered to be a watershed album, with the albums before it being more conventional in structure and the albums after it being looser, free jazz inspired works. In addition, it signaled Coltrane's interest in moving away from the quartet format. The album is a 40 minute performance; the musicians solo sequentially, with collective improvisations beginning and ending each solo. The Ascension sessions consisted of two takes, both of which are available on the CD reissue.
