Talk:Aryamehr
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No matter what dialect of Persian you speak, there is no way you can pronounce barādar-e-man (my brother), barādar-i-man!
mistakenly translitering Neshan-e-Aryamehr/barādar-e-man into Nishan-i-Aryamehr/barādar-i-man is a common mistake prevalent among Arabs familiar with the Persian language or Westerners familiar with the Arabic script who will pronounce Persian vowels and consonants the Arabic way; because except for a handful of letters, the Persian and Arabic language use the same alphabet. although in Persian (no matter literal or spoken) consonants and vowels are pronounced differently:
example:
Arabic: Ramadhan | Persian: Ramazan Arabic: Kitab | Persian: Ketab
There's no way one can pronounce the short vowel Kasre, [i]! in Persian it is always pronounced [e] as in "kernel".
If one were to pronounce Neshan-e-Aryamehr, Nishan-i-Aryamehr, then he had to change Aryamehr into Aryamihr as well.
The pronounciation Nishan-i-Aryamehr sounds alien in Persian.
This style of translitering the Persian words is due to the misconception that the Arabic transliteration can be used for Persian words as well provided that they share the same alphabet.
both "Neshan" and "Aryamehr" are Persian words (not Arabic loan words).
PS: transliteration of Arabic loan words in Persian must be discussed. as in this article "Taj ul-Mulk" is Arabic but it is (and has always been) pronounced "Taj-ol-Molk" in Persian. in this case I'm not sure whether it is appropriate and convenient to transliter it as "Taj ul-Mulk" or "Taj-ol-Molk".
