German explorer Arved Fuchs was born in 1953. On December 30, 1989, he and the famous mountain climber Reinhold Messner were the first to reach the South pole without animal or motorised help, on skis and the help of wind. Many of his expeditions have been placed on water, as his failed attempt to sail around North Pole on a traditional sailing boat (1991-1994). This boat, named Dagmar Aaen, is still used by Fuchs on his current expeditions.
