Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion/Gotem(speech)

As a side comment on this discussion, although it is finished, I actually personally know all of those accused "sock puppet" voters. People should not be so quick to label sock puppets. They were probably all told about the article and wanted to show that it is in fact a widely-used term around here. 63.21.200.26 6 July 2005 03:55 (UTC)

"Sock puppets" is often used (though it shouldn't be used in this fashion) to cover two similar but ultimately different categories of voters. One is "sock puppets" as described at Wikipedia:Sock puppets, people using multiple accounts to try and look like multiple voters; the other is people who have no history with Wikipedia but who were recruited to go to Wikipedia and join the discussion to attempt to sway it. So far many names for the latter type have been proposed (I prefer "run-in voters", myself) but none have stuck; they continue to be lumped in with actual sock puppets, perhaps because as far as the "voting" is concerned they both count about equally. A "Votes for Deletion" discussion is really not so much about the votes as it is about calling on the judgement of experienced Wikipedians. People who show up for the first time for a particular vote may be acting in good faith, but they're not bringing that sort of experienced judgement to the table. -- Antaeus Feldspar 7 July 2005 01:34 (UTC)
How do you know? Maybe they are experienced Wikipedians who simply wish to have a different user name. --Charlesxavier 22:33, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
That may be. But if they want to be treated as having the benefit of experience, they need to use the user name that reflects their experience. No real way around that, I'm afraid. -- Antaeus Feldspar 03:21, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
