This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion of the article below. This page is no longer live. Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record.
The result of the debate was MERGE. dbenbenn | talk 19:28, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)
The votes were 7 delete, 7 merge, 5 keep, and 1 "delete or merge". Since the deletes weren't in the majority, I've interpreted them all as "delete or merge".
[edit] Bigelow-Rice Hall, Wesleyan, Edgar Hall, Wesleyan, Sturges Hall, Wesleyan, University Hall, Wesleyan, Elliott Hall, Wesleyan, Slocum Hall, Wesleyan, Conrades•Wetherell Science Center, Wesleyan Phillips Hall, Wesleyan
An apparent attempt to create stubs on every building in Ohio Wesleyan University. Not typical practice for university articles (Yale has pages for some of its buildings, but I can't find any other university that does), and these aren't notable in any way other than being buildings in a small college. — Asbestos | Talk 15:08, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all or Merge into Ohio Wesleyan University if describing these buildings will actually add value to the article. --Deathphoenix 17:50, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Delete the lot as not notable. Starblind 18:02, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. There is enough detail in Ohio Wesleyan University already. Susvolans (pigs can fly) 18:34, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Delete all - These were placed online by a user who feels that the OWU listing should have been beyond standard Wiki guidelines. I know this user very well and have been in dialogue about the unfortuate direction that he felt the article should have taken. Initally, this user also insisted that catagories also be place on Wikipedia for OWU buildings (and those catagories need to be deleted as well). None of the buildings listed here merits its own listing on Wikipedia with the text that accompanies them; unless someone is willing to flush out facts about them (architect, important events tied to these specific buildings, etc. Finally, while a listing on the National Register of Historic Places is a designation that recognizes the building role in history, design merit and/or significant people tied to the listing; unless someone is willing to flush that information out, simply stating that a building is on the list isn't enough for that building to have it own listing. - Delete all as campuscruft. Wyss 22:58, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. Rananim is the Everyking of Ohio Wesleyan University. RickK 00:29, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Keep, or merge into an article on the buildings of Ohio Wesleyan. - SimonP 00:55, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Keep - merge and redirect to Facilities of Ohio Wesleyan University or somesuch. This may be a good test case for how much information on a university can work here. Clearly it's premature for these to be separate articles, though. Refer this to Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities for them to decide a standard. -- Netoholic @ 02:38, 2005 Jan 13 (UTC)
- merge per SimonP, definitely do not keep as individual articles. Michael Ward 02:56, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Merge information into buildings of Ohio Wesleyan University. Delete all the articles, but keep redirects that drop the comma and the "Wesleyan" (e.g., Elliott Hall instead of Elliott Hall, Wesleyan). Neutralitytalk 03:21, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Keep pending further standards. Defer to SimonP and Netoholic. --JuntungWu 04:58, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Keep see SimonP and Netoholic. --Boothy443 05:03, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Abstain, but I refer you all to Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Pnikolov for insight into what is going on here. -- Jmabel | Talk 19:23, Jan 13, 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. Non notable, too specific. JoaoRicardo 03:25, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Delete. Non-notable, not to mention inaccurately titled (Ohio Wesleyan, not Wesleyan). --Calton 06:09, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- merge into single article. it is not not notable. Xtra 07:05, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Merge. What a surprise to be perusing VfD and discovering my Alma Mater in this way. Elliot Hall is marginally notable because it is the first building on campus and dates to 1833. University Hall dates to 1901 and has a very nice organ, but is not particularly notable. Phillips Hall is just an ugly 1950s building. The Scienece Center was just renovated and expanded and is as nonnotable now as it was before said renovation. Merrick sits abandoned and is mildly interesting architecturally, yet not notable in any meaningful way. Sturges is old, architecturally banal, and singularly hideous as a building. Slocum has gorgeous stained glass, but not much esle to comment on. As always, poor Sanborn Hall, home of the School of Music, seems to have been forgotten enitrely. These pages just need to all go away. Indrian 05:52, Jan 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I suppose I'd be perfectly happy with a merge to Ohio Wesleyan University, though, as I understand it, that means keeping all of these as redirects, which seems kind of inappropriate to me. It's not likely that anyone is going to look these up, and it's not likely that any other article will link to them. -- Jmabel | Talk 21:42, Jan 16, 2005 (UTC)
- As far as I understand, a merge doesn't usually imply a redirect (hence the "merge and redirect" vote that is sometimes used). If redirects are used, though, they would obviously need a different title (as "X Hall, Wesleyan" is clearly a misnomer given the number of universities listed in Wesleyan). — Asbestos | Talk 22:04, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I think that the bigger question is, do these listing (on their own) mean anything to anyone other than Rananim (et.al.) who launched them? Now if they were named for someone who did something significant, then maybe they should be mentioned under that person's article on Wikipedia. So it goes back to the question, do these building articles add value to Wikipedia? Are they listings that someone would visit the site just to look for, or are they something that only an OWU person/alumnus would look for? Are they significant enough on their own to stand alone?[[User:Stude62|user: stude62 talk:stude62]] 22:23, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- I think I can pretty safely say from experience that these buildings do not deserve individual listings. Elliot Hall at the least deserves to be mentioned on the Ohio Wesleyan University page as do little tidbits like the beautiful organ in Gray Chapel and the stained glass in Slocum, just this summer restored to its original beauty, but none of it is significant outside of the university. I think a redirect would not be appropriate. If I have to make a choice between a merge and redirect and a delete vote, I would rather these pages were deleted, at which point I could just add a few of these tidbits to the main university page myself. - Merge and redirect to either the main article or, if that's not possible, to a page titled Ohio Wesleyan buildings. →Reene✎ 11:34, Jan 18, 2005 (UTC)
- Merge into main article or if necessary, Ohio Wesleyan buildings. --fvw* 18:10, 2005 Jan 20 (UTC)
- Keep, or merge into an article on the buildings of Ohio Wesleyan. - Rananim 02:55, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)
- For whatever reason, the date stamp of Rananim's comment above is inaccurate. He left it at 07:26, 2005 Jan 25. Rananim is the originator of these Wesleyan articles. -- Netoholic @ 17:34, 2005 Jan 25 (UTC)
