[edit] Dear Rove

Dear Rove, or dear_rove, is a popular blog hosted on livejournal. The blog is an archive of weekly hate mail that its maintainer, who identifies himself only by the first name of Brad, has sent to Australian television personality Rove McManus. The blog, despite being criticised for being bitter and extreme, has achieved popularity due to an increasing consensus in Australian society that McManus is over-rated with mimimal comic talent. Its author regularly includes pleas for Rove to reply to his letters at least once, but to date this has not happened. The letters, however, serve a dual purpose as comic entertainment for the blog's many readers. The blog gained attention in Australian news media in late 2006, following the wave of public support for McManus after the death of his wife Belinda Emmett

[edit] History

As stated on the blog's profile:

Wikipedia:Articles for creation/2006-12-09
I began sending Rove hate mail a little over three years ago in 2002. It began as a weekly task. I had a lecture at university at 9am and then a break from 10am until midday until my tutorial began. I often found it hard to fill this time. However, I sent Rove hate mail after a particularly bad show and really enjoyed it. As a result, I coined the term 'Hate Mail Monday.' After receiving no response at all to any piece of mail, I decided to up the volume of hate mail by sending hate mail bi-weekly early in 2004. This day was known as 'Hate Mail Thursday.' Since this time, I have been sending Rove hate mail twice a week, every week (save for exceptional circumstances).

Sadly, in all my correspondance I am yet to receive a reply. In October, I began an endevour to have some of my hate mail published on e-zines and magazines, but to no avail. This has led me to post them on a Live Journal. In an effort to increase the quality of these emails, I will cease 'Hate Mail Thursday' and revert back to 'Hate Mail Monday' only. All emails found on this Live Journal are also sent to Rove's email address which can be found on his website.

[edit] Regular Features

The weekly letters typically contain:

  • An opening paragraph, in which its author fascetiously greets Rove, gives a description of events from his last week/weekend just passed and concludes with snide comments criticising McManus
  • The author's comments about the guests appearing on the upcoming episode of Rove Live, usually either criticising the guest or criticising Rove's (in)ability to use the guest effectively on the program
  • Criticism of McManus' comic techniques, generally asserting that he is not funny, has no 'edge', and that his formulaic-at-best humour is driven much more by idiotic showmanship than wit or insight
  • Criticism of segments and/or material from the program which are, in the eyes of many critics, plagiarised from other (mostly American) programs
  • Humorous and/or sarcastic references to current events and celebrity gossip
  • A concluding paragraph starting with the words "Hey, Pete" (an address to Rove Live's co-host Peter Helliar, whom the author asserts is much funnier and more naturally talented than McManus), which ranges from sarcastic zingers to comic non sequiters

[edit] Southport Reporter

Southport Reporter, an e-newspaper that was started by Patrick Trollope BA(Hons) LBPPA, is the UK’s very first internet only regional newspaper. It was quickly recognized by the NUJ as well as other media groups, authorities and organizations as a newspaper. This recognition was due to the fact it was only run by certificated professional journalists (Often the journalist held NUJ or IFJ ID/certification). As a result they had to follow and run under the rules of the UK Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice and the NUJ Code of Conduct. The newspaper or virtual-newspaper's name was Trade Marked under the UK's Trade Mark Act 1994 Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as a newspaper, in 12 February 2002 under the registration No. 2292469.

[edit] Development History

The idea started as a single page on Formby Online over 1998 and 1999. By 1999 it had grown into a multi-page section and the name was by then being developed. In 1999 the pages moved fully onto PCBT Photography by Patrick Trollope. The interest shown in the multi-page section over 1999 made the site develop quicker than expected. The interest made it hard to keep the bandwidth down and the pages had to be moved onto SGB

to handle the increase in 2000. This increase helped the title name to become more established and this lead to it being registered both as a URL and as Trade Mark. By 2001 the site became fully established as a fully independently hosted site known as SouthportReporter.com. As the site became bigger it added more URL names and the group became the Mersey and Southport Reporter Series.
