[edit] Topic starting 13 March 2006

I'm thinking that a literature topic might be good this week, particularly if we can get the novels wikiproject involved. violet/riga (t) 20:45, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

  • Reading through the suggestions, 9/11 hijackers stands out. Perhaps we could do something else this week and get the novels wikiproject involved so that they could give us an idea of what literature topic would be the right size? Personally I don't know enough about literature articles to say what would be a good list... I think if we choose 20th century fictional novels we're bound to get a whole lot of nominations though and very few of actual merit. Just my two cents. -DMurphy 22:20, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
    • How about Science Fiction? By the way, who and how do we decide on a suggestion? Can someone leave that in my talk page? Thanks. Mkaycomputer 19:13, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
I don't think I'll get to create this tonight as I will be offline. I'll try and sort it out in the morning if nobody else has done it already, but I'd like to see some more discussion of the topic choice first. violet/riga (t) 19:58, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

So the main choice seems to be one of the following two:

Which do we think? violet/riga (t) 22:26, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I did some searching on the subject, and science-fiction novels is far too broad. There are over 700 Science Fiction Novels alone. If we really want to do a sci-fi novel topic, we'll have to do something like:

Or if you want to get a little more obscure:

Personally I think the Hugo Award-winning works would be a good category and would give us just the right amount of variety (a little sci-fi and a little fantasy), plus all the articles are bound to be books of importance unlike the other categories, which will likely be obscure. Otherwise, I think we should go with a biography category, but I also agree that right now none of the suggestions are entirely exciting. -DMurphy 22:55, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

Hugo Award-winning works has my full support - I'll do that when I have time (hopefully this evening). violet/riga (t) 11:31, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] General discussion

[edit] Geography, Economics and Government

[edit] Culture of a country

Any "Culture of [country]" article. See Category:Culture by nationality. violet/riga (t) 16:05, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

This might be too wide as well. violet/riga (t) 23:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps narrow it to a specific continent? In that case I'd say either Europe or Asia would be the best option. --DMurphy 01:36, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] U.S. State Supreme Courts

E.g. New Hampshire Supreme Court and Maryland Court of Appeals. There is a bounty on these articles as well. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 16:54, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fortune 500 companies

Fortune 500 companies. --Quadell (talk) (bounties) 02:56, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Seems a little broad for my taste. -DMurphy 01:27, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NGOs

[edit] Modern cities with fewer than 50,000 people

Modern cities with fewer than 50,000 people. -Quadell (talk) (bounties) 02:56, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • How many articles on modern cities with < 50,000 are there of note anyway? seems too restrictive/uninteresting. -DMurphy 23:10, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
    • True - there may be some other way we can choose cities without it being too open. violet/riga (t) 23:31, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] People (Biographies)

Any category that would include articles on individuals or small groups.

[edit] 9/11 hijackers

Of the 19, one is a featured article and none are stubs. So there would be 18 candidates. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 14:51, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

  • P.S. This is a closed list, in that there are only 19. Is that poor form? Is this open to both "open" and "closed" topics? Would "planets" be acceptable, even though there are only 9 or so? – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 14:56, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
    • I can't see any problem with having closed topics, and this looks like a good suggestion to me. violet/riga (t) 17:00, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Biography of a novelist

The biography of any novelist that has had at least 5 books published. violet/riga (t) 16:05, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Millionaires. -Quadell (talk) (bounties) 02:56, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • There's a lot of those... I think it needs to be narrowed. -DMurphy 01:27, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
    • Um, billionaires? The first was Rockefeller, iirc. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 13:22, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
      • We could do Australian Millionaires, or Millionaires under the age of 20... violet/riga (t) 15:35, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] People named Laura

People named Laura. -Quadell (talk) (bounties) 02:56, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

  • I'd shy away from obscure ways to connect articles like this. Sure, it makes the nomination process a bit more fun, but when we get to the evaluation, there would be no real method for comparison like we had with Natural Disasters. --DMurphy 04:13, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] CVG Genres

Any computer and/or video game genre. Partial list here, full list here. Nifboy 23:09, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

That's a good idea. We could look at, for example, all fighting games. violet/riga (t) 23:48, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
  • How about Browser-based games? The category has 40 articles (if counting Neopets and not counting flash games) and a pretty good cross-section of quality. --DMurphy 05:24, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ancient civilisations

As suggested by Mgm. A great idea. Looking at Category:Ancient peoples there are quite a few, so we'd need to have some form of criteria. violet/riga (t) 22:06, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Literature

[edit] 20th century novels

didnt see any literature category - would be interesting to do a sampling of 20th century fictional novels, as there are so few featured (i counted 2, with 1 about to be de-featured). could also be a combined effort with the novels wikiproject. Zzzzz 18:21, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Trilogies

    • On that note, how about Beatles articles? There's plenty of them. (suggestion here) --DMurphy 04:13, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
  • I prefer not to have suggestions with a tangental connection. Beatles articles seems like a better bet. - Mgm|(talk) 11:11, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other

[edit] News items

We could look at all the major news stories of one particular month. Perhaps the best idea would be to do one from last month or from this month last year. violet/riga (t) 23:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Personally I think current news articles tend to be disproportionately large, and we could probably better serve the wiki if we evaluated articles of more historical or encyclopaedic significance. Plus, since the articles draw so many participants, they tend to be pretty accurate. Just my opinion though. --DMurphy 04:26, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
