Artesia (comics)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artesia is an epic fantasy comic book series authored and illustrated by Mark Smylie. Artesia is also the name of the heroine of the cycle. Mark Smylie has described her as a "Pagan Joan of Arc", to use a popular reference, while noting that the closest historical model is the Irish Queen Medb. The series is noted for its depiction of feudal politics, intrigue, and power struggles, its complex mythology and world history, and its strong female characters.

Currently the series is composed of three "books": Artesia, Artesia Afield, and Artesia Afire. Each of the book is composed of six episodes. The three books together constitute part of a cycle called The Book of Dooms, which will last either 7 or 22 books, depending on the persistence of the author[1].

Each of the series has been followed by an annual compendium including a short story and details of the history, geography and mythology of Artesia's universe.

In 2005, a roleplaying game set in the world of Artesia was released. It uses the Fuzion roleplaying system, and is called Artesia: Adventures in the Known World.
