Arrondissements of the Vienne département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Vienne département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Châtellerault, (sous-préfecture: Châtellerault) with 12 cantons and 96 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 108,636 in 1990, and was 109,202 in 1999, an increase of 0.52%.
- Arrondissement of Montmorillon, (sous-préfecture: Montmorillon) with 11 cantons and 98 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 74,008 in 1990, and was 74,045 in 1999, an increase of 0.05%.
- Arrondissement of Poitiers, (préfecture of the Vienne département: Poitiers) with 15 cantons and 87 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 197,361 in 1990, and was 215,777 in 1999, an increase of 9.33%.
