Arrondissements of the Vendée département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Vendée département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Fontenay-le-Comte, (sous-préfecture: Fontenay-le-Comte) with 9 cantons and 107 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 119,665 in 1990, and was 119,403 in 1999, a decrease of 0.22%.
- Arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon, (préfecture of the Vendée département: La Roche-sur-Yon) with 11 cantons and 92 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 217,052 in 1990, and was 230,386 in 1999, an increase of 6.14%.
- Arrondissement of Les Sables-d'Olonne, (sous-préfecture: Les Sables-d'Olonne) with 11 cantons and 83 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 172,639 in 1990, and was 189,875 in 1999, an increase of 9.98%.
