Arrondissements of the Vaucluse département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Vaucluse département of France has 3 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Apt, (sous-préfecture: Apt) with 6 cantons and 56 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 106,115 in 1990, and was 116,644 in 1999, an increase of 9.92%.
- Arrondissement of Avignon, (préfecture of the Vaucluse département: Avignon) with 10 cantons and 37 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 259,945 in 1990, and was 269,828 in 1999, an increase of 3.8%.
- Arrondissement of Carpentras, (sous-préfecture: Carpentras) with 8 cantons and 58 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 101,015 in 1990, and was 113,213 in 1999, an increase of 12.08%.
