Arrondissements of the Moselle département
In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Moselle département of France has 9 arrondissements. These are:
- Arrondissement of Boulay-Moselle, (sous-préfecture: Boulay-Moselle) with 3 cantons and 96 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 74,756 in 1990, and was 74,628 in 1999, a decrease of 0.17%.
- Arrondissement of Château-Salins, (sous-préfecture: Château-Salins) with 5 cantons and 128 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 28,315 in 1990, and was 28,480 in 1999, an increase of 0.58%.
- Arrondissement of Forbach, (sous-préfecture: Forbach) with 7 cantons and 73 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 180,973 in 1990, and was 176,036 in 1999, a decrease of 2.73%.
- Arrondissement of Metz-Campagne, (préfecture of the Moselle département: Metz) with 9 cantons and 142 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 202,545 in 1990, and was 211,863 in 1999, an increase of 4.6%.
- Arrondissement of Sarrebourg, (sous-préfecture: Sarrebourg) with 5 cantons and 102 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 60,817 in 1990, and was 62,098 in 1999, an increase of 2.11%.
- Arrondissement of Sarreguemines, (sous-préfecture: Sarreguemines) with 6 cantons and 83 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 97,442 in 1990, and was 99,980 in 1999, an increase of 2.6%.

- Arrondissement of Thionville-Ouest, (sous-préfecture: Thionville-Ouest) with 6 cantons and 30 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 123,708 in 1990, and was 119,045 in 1999, a decrease of 3.77%.
- Arrondissement of Metz-Ville, (préfecture of the Moselle département: Metz) with 4 cantons and one commune. The population of the arrondissement was 119,594 in 1990, and was 123,776 in 1999, an increase of 3.5%.
