Arrondissements of the Hautes-Alpes département

In France, the chief town of an arrondissement is known as the sous-préfecture. When an arrondissement contains the préfecture (capital) of the département, that préfecture is the capital of the arrondissement, acting both as a préfecture and as a sous-préfecture. The Hautes-Alpes département of France has 2 arrondissements. These are:

  1. Arrondissement of Briançon, (sous-préfecture: Briançon) with 7 cantons and 38 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 31,042 in 1990, and was 32,124 in 1999, an increase of 3.49%.
  2. Arrondissement of Gap, (préfecture of the Hautes-Alpes département: Gap) with 23 cantons and 139 communes. The population of the arrondissement was 82,258 in 1990, and was 89,295 in 1999, an increase of 8.55%.
