Armenian oblast
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Armenian oblast was an oblast (province) of the Russian Empire from 1828 to 1840, roughly corresponding to most of the present-day Republic of Armenia, the Iğdır Province of Turkey, and Azerbaijan's Nakhichevan exclave. It was created by the Russians on the territory of the former Erivan and Nakhichevan Khanates which were ceded by the Persian Empire in the Treaty of Turkamanchai after the Russo-Persian War (1826-1828). Ivan Paskevich, the Ukrainian-born military leader was made count of the oblast in the year of its creation.
