Armed and Hammered

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Armed and Hammered was a hardcore punk band from Toronto, Canada, spawned from the Kensington Market, BFG scene 1989-2002. The lead singer, Mopa Dean, who was also the bassist for Masochistic Religion, arguably Canada’s foremost Goth band, left in 2000 and formed the G-Men in 2002. The second bassist, Kieran Plunket, left in early 1991 and formed The Restarts after playing with the Verukers and then moving to the UK.

Their discography includes one full length CD release on Obese Records in 1997, three 7 inch vinyl records, and two audio cassette tapes, as well as many releases on compilations world wide (Disease Control - Muck records, Dead on the Road, 20 Songs Comp. - Raw Energy Records, Living in fear - Ransome Note Records).

They have had one European tour, two American tours, and several notable Canadian Tours in the Windsor to Quebec City Corridor (the Canadian "jugular").

The original singer, Mopa Dean, an asthmatic Maltese-Canadian CDF veteran with a powerful monobrow and moderate grip on sanity, left the group in in 2000 and was replaced by the singer of a local grindcore band Jaww. Armed and Hammered only performed 4 more shows before breaking up permanently.

The band itself saw some recognition as its first full release hit #1 on the campus charts in Canada in the end of 1997 and stayed on the charts for an additional 5 months.

The band was banned from a repeat performance on Much Music when they were playing during a live “AIDS benefit” broadcast across Canada. The media cited them as being vulgar and swearing and they were removed from the rebroadcast the next day.

The band was also known for the number of “benefit” shows they did, usually for activist causes such as for the (Animal Liberation Front, Women's centres, Anti-Racist Action, Casey House Aids Hospice and Community radio) or personal hardship, which many of their own members suffered often, often nearly finding themselves on the brink of squegueeing.

Articles about Armed and Hammered have appeared in MMR, Flipside, Eye and NOW.
