Location of Arlit in Niger

Arlit is an industrial town in northern Niger, situated 200 km by road from the border with Algeria. Founded in the 1960s, it has grown around the uranium mining industry and is also home to an airport. It has a population of 69,435 (2001 census}. French company Areva employs 1 600 persons on the site, according to Le Canard Enchaîné (August 3, 2005). In the build-up to the war in Iraq there was controversy over allegations in 2003 that Saddam Hussein was seeking to purchase uranium from Arlit.
