Arkham (Devil May Cry)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arkham is a fictional character from the video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. He is voiced and acted through motion capture by Adam D. Clark.
In Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, Arkham appears as a mysterious man with seemingly supernatural abilities. He is in the opening mission one cutscene where he walks into Dante's office, talking to him about his brother Vergil who has sent him "An invitation", before throwing Dante's desk across the room and disapearing before Dante grabs his gun. Dante is then subsequently attacked by demons, it could be possible that Arkham sent them to help weaken Dante.
Arkham is then seen on top of the newly risen Temen-Ni-Gru in the mission 3 opening, where he talks to Vergil about the past glories of the tower and the inhirant evil that it bought upon the world, and how it can finally fufill it's grand purpose now that Sparda has died. He is then interrupted by Vergil who simply does not care about the matter, he is only concerned about Dante's amulet. Regardless of this slight, Arkham reports that Dante is "Taking good care of it. After all, it is the only memento from the mother you both lost."
Arkham soon learns from Vergil that an "Uninvited Guest", a human woman, has infiltrated the tower, and is a possible threat. Arkham confesses that even though this woman is not described to him, he already knows who it is, implying a possible connection between the two. As Arkham is heading off to deal with his problem, the scars on his face move, perhaps due to gaining super-human strength.
He mysteriously dissapears, roughly around the same time as Dante encounters Jester, who seems to be an inhabitant of the tower who is released and causing havoc. He later appears at the end of mission 6, confronting Lady. Lady has the intent to kill Arkham, demonstrated by her pulling her gun on him, he remarks "You point a gun at me? Your own kin? Your dear papa?", Lady shoots at him, but he suddenly appears to be on top of the celieng, and he throws it book down onto her, blocking her shot, before throwing her off the tower, she manages to get off a shot which scrapes Arkham's cheek.
He then proceeds to the top of the tower, seeing Vergil victorious over Dante and having obtained his amulet. As they are leaving Dante's powers have awakened, but is still weak. Vergil gets ready to kill him, but Arkham tells him to stop, because they have "all that they need.". They jump off the tower to the ground, and open the way into the Forbidden Land, which goes into the very foundations of the Temen-Ni-Gru. Arkham looks back across, as if in unease, Vergil asks him if something is wrong, but Arkham says "Nothing.". As Vergil and Arkham proceed along the corridors the entire building shakes, the Demon Prince's weapon, Leviathan, has fallen by Dante's hands.
They soon reach the Lair Of Judgment, where the sealing of the tower and it's full power had taken place by Sparda's hands. Arkham comments on the irony that Sparda's own son is going to unleash hell on the Human World once again, Vergil does not respond to this comment. Arkham looks around again, and Vergil asks why he didn't kill Lady in the first place: "Perhaps because she's your daughter? Did some pesky fatherly love get in the way?" Arkham confronts Vergil, but is then stabbed in the chest with Yamamoto. Vergil thought Arkham was going to be more useful as he sacrificed his humanity, and his wife, in order to become a devil, but then claims that he was wrong. Arkham, coughing up blood, insults Vergil that he is an "Incomplete being. Human and Demon blood mingles in your Veins." He then has the sword pulled out of him and falls to the floor.
Dante later finds Arkham on the floor, but strangely in a different corridor. Lady then tends to him as he is dying, and he claims that he was manipulated into doing evil by Vergil, he then tells Lady to kill Vergil. He dies in Lady's arms.
After Dante defeats Beowulf in the Torture Chamber, it is revealed that Arkham's body has disappeared from it's spot, leaving the book he always carried with him behind. Soon, Dante encounters Jester.
In the Lair Of Judgment, Lady, Vergil and Dante are battling each other, but then are easily defeated by Jester, who reveals himself to be Arkham in disguise, and can switch forms almost instantly, as well as his grand plan. He desired to become a ruler over all the Human World, and in order to do that he would need the power of Sparda. He needed to keep them all alive, but at the same time fighting each other in order to weaken them, even going as far as "Dressing like a complete idiot." He also needed the blood of Lady, as she is related to a priestess that drew her blood along with Sparda 2000 years ago. With this the tower is fully activated, and he knocks the trio off the platform as it rises to the top of the structure. After reaching the top of the tower Arkham performs an ancient ritual, and opens the gateway to the Demon World, and goes into the sky.
In the Demon World, Arkham obtains the sword of Sparda, the Force Edge. With this power he turns into the demon form of Sparda, and taunts Dante about it as they prepare to fight, but then transforms into a more hideous creature due to being part human and thus not able to hold the power, and also because of the darkness in his heart. As they battle, Dante fights hard, but is beginning to tire whilst Arkham is still going strong, but Vergil's intervention grants victory to the brothers. Arkham thus loses his new found power and is sent back into the Human World, badly wounded.
On the top of the Temen-Ni-Gru again, Arkham still tries to obtain the power he desires but is stopped by Lady. He attempts to justify his reasons for his actions, as well as Lady's help. She refuses and as Arkham screams "NO!", she shoots him in the head several times, finally killing Arkham.
[edit] Personality
Arkham appears to be educated in the subject of Demonology, and the Temen-ni-gru, as well as the legend of Sparda. His voice is well spoken and strong, being very cold in the process. His posture also reflects this as he stands upright and confidently, unlike Dante and Lady. In most of his scenes he is holding a book in his hands, even while he is in combat, this book perhaps is literature on the subject of Sparda's exploits.
[edit] Quotes
- "Temen-Ni-Gru, a foundation that brought out fear. Yes, fear. Can't you feel it? The rage and agonies of the people, those who were confined here, with their desires for evil being unfufilled. It was all because Sparda slammed the door to the Demon World in their faces."
- "Let's welcome chaos."
- "What have I done wrong!? Even the heroic Sparda sacrificed a woman so that he can become a legend! I wished to be a God! And I sacrificed one miserable human being for that reason! That is all, was that really so awful?"
- He plucks the threads that make us dance, finger and toe. We surrender, in joy, to the lowest of the foul and rank. We submerge through darkness, rancid filth. Hour by hour we move downward, ever closer to hell. In a slow, steady, gait. Now, let the world resonate.Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, Envy, Lust, Wrath, and Pride. A bell of chaos that tolls human desires. After two thousand long years, the one sealed gate to the demonic world will open. Destruction! (His eyes glow) Carnage and Despair! Let your instincts drive you. Entrap this world in fear! As its very name Temen-ni-gru strikes terror into the hearts of mankind. And I, will become the ultimate ruler of this wasteland, engulfed with pandemonium. The demonic power that Sparda once imprisoned... will be mine!"
