Ariella II of Furstán-Festil

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Ariella II Furstána-Festila was the seventh Festillic Pretender. She held the title for less than a month in 1025, a period of time that coincided with the early reign of the legitimate King of Gwynedd, Malcolm Haldane.

Ariella Athénodóra Amaranda Furstána-Festila was born on March 3, 971, the eldest child of Prince Mark-Imre and the granddaughter of the Festillic Pretender, Prince Imre II. In 1025, at the age of 54, she inherited the Festillic claim to the throne of Gwynedd following the disastrous events of the Battle of Killingford. On June 17, the final day of the battle, her brother (Prince Imre III), her nephew (Prince Marek II), and her nephew's eldest son (Prince Festil) were all killed during the defeat of the Torenthi army. One week later, the last direct male heir to the Festillic claim, Prince Marek III, was captured and executed. The news of the debacle at Killingford reached Ariella on June 26, but she had no desire to press her claim as Queen of Gwynedd. Citing her advanced age, she renounced her claim to the throne of Gwynedd on July 8 in favor of her younger sister, Princess Imriella. Ariella spent the next two decades ministering to the injured survivors of Killingford, and eventually retired to Convent of Saint Catulina. Neither Ariella nor her sister produced any surviving heirs, and Imriella died six years before her elder sister. As a result, the senior line of the House of Furstán-Festil came to end when Ariella herself died. Prince Ariella II Furstána-Festila died on December 9, 1045, at the age of 74.
