Argo City
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Argo City is a fictional Kryptonian city in the DC Comics Universe.
[edit] Pre-Crisis
Prior to the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Argo was a city which survived the initial destruction of Krypton (Superman's homeworld). The piece of Krypton on which Argo City sat, as it moved through space, was gradually turning into Anti-Kryptonite; however it was lined with lead to protect its citizens from the deadly radiation. When a meteor shower pierced the lead lining, which would lead to the destruction of Argo City, the scientist Zor-El sent his daughter Kara in a tiny spaceship to Earth, where her cousin Kal-El (Superman's Kryptonian name) helped her become Supergirl. Supergirl's origin and Argo City's fate were first described in Action Comics #252 (May 1959).
[edit] Post-Crisis
Recently Argo was shown to still be in-continuity. In issue #6 of Supergirl, both Supergirl and Power Girl are found in the bottled city of Kandor. There it is claimed by Supergirl that the city of Argo still exists, and that she's searching for it as it is a piece of her home. It is not directly stated in Post-Crisis continuity whether Argo survived the destruction of Krypton, as Supergirl was jettisoned from Krypton at the same time as the infant Superman.
[edit] Other Media
In 1984's Supergirl (film), Argo City is presented as having survived in a pocket of extradimensional space, with life-support powered by a device called the Omegahedron, the loss of which forms the basis of the film's plot.
In the television series Superman: The Animated Series, Argo is said to be the name of Krypton's "sister planet" knocked out of orbit by Krypton's destruction, with a cryonically frozen Supergirl as the lone survivor of a small colony of settlers.
