[edit] Geography
The city is located in the Altmark region and in the southern bank of Lake Arendsee. This lake is 23,3 m above sea level, and its area is 5.115 (or 5.14) km², its depth nearly 50 m. It is the largest and deepest natural lake in Saxony-Anhalt. It lies over the top of a salt dome and was developed by several caving-in after subrosion. Hydrologically, the lake is more or less "isolated" with only a small ditch connecting with the Elbe river very indirectly. The water body (0.147 bill. m³) only changes one time in a 100 years.
