[edit] Trivia

Area code 917 is the first overlay area code in the North American Numbering Plan. It is also the only "service-specific" area code in the NANP. Shortly after its implementation, the FCC ruled that new area codes cannot be assigned as service-specific, but it allowed 917 to remain as such.

Although 917 was originally established as a service-specific area code available in all of the five boroughs, it is now most commonly associated with the borough of Manhattan. At present, all landlines that are assigned the 917 area code are located in Manhattan. Despite this, 917 remains the most common area code assigned to cell phones throughout the city. In Manhattan, however, area code 646 is beginning to overtake this role, as is likewise the case with area code 347 in the outer boroughs.
