Area code 906
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 906 is the telephone area code for the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including the following cities:
- Marquette, Michigan
- Ishpeming, Michigan
- Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan
- Escanaba, Michigan
- Houghton, Michigan
- Norway, Michigan
- Iron Mountain, Michigan
- Mackinac Island, Michigan
It is, in terms of population, one of the smallest area codes in North America, with only about 320,000 people in the region served by 906. It was created as a spilt from 616 sometime during early 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing period.
[edit] Trivia
906 was not created out of any need for new numbers. Despite dating from 1961, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2023. [1] Reportedly it was once proposed that the Upper Peninsula split off from Michigan to become part of Wisconsin back in the late 50s; since the FCC does not allow area codes to cross state lines in the US (unlike Canada, where area codes often cross provincial and territorial boundaries), a new area code was thought necessary and granted.[citation needed]
