[edit] History

760 was created March 22, 1997 out of what were then parts of the area codes 714 and 619. In less than two years, however, the North American Numbering Plan Administration stated that the area code was running out of telephone numbers, and proposed two possibilities for remedying the situation: a geographic area code split, or an area code overlay. However, the public was dissatisfied with these possibilities, so the state instead examined the possibility of conserving telephone numbers, a great deal of which are currently held but unused by various companies within the area code.
