Area code 616 was one of the original area codes of 1947. It covered all of the Western Lower half of Michigan and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Now after 3 splits, it only serves the Grand Rapids – Wyoming and Holland – Grand Haven metropolitan areas, which includes Kent, Ionia and Ottawa counties as well as parts of the surrounding counties.
