Area code 403
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 403 is a telephone area code in the Canadian province of Alberta, encompassing the southern half of the province.
Prior to 1997, the 403 area code encompassed the whole province of Alberta, the Yukon and the western half of the Northwest Territories. The territories were given their own separate area code, 867, in 1997. In 1999, the northern half of Alberta was split into the new area code 780.
Communities served by the 403 area code include Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer and Banff.
[edit] Relief Planning
As of July 2006, the projected exhaust date for Area Code 403 is October of 2009. For more information see the Canadian Numbering Administrator Website. A new area code, either 587 or 825, will be assigned by spring of 2007. The 403 area code, simultaneously with 780, will be overlaid with the new area code, which will cover the entire province. 10-digit dialing (area code plus 7-digit subscriber number) will be made mandatory province-wide.
