Area code 320

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Area code 320 is the telephone numbering plan code covering much of central and western Minnesota. It was the fourth Minnesota area code, created in 1996 when it was carved out of the former area code 612, which stretched from east to west in a band across the state's midsection. The Twin Cities region retained 612, while the rest of the area became 320. The region includes cities such as St. Cloud and Morris.

Since that time, the 612 area code has been further reduced in size so that it now just includes the city of Minneapolis and a few inner-ring suburbs. Due to its unique shape, 320 now borders every area code in the state except for 612. Area code 651 split from 612 in 1998 and now borders the eastern tip of the region, while area code 763 and area code 952 were split from 612 in 2000 and retained roughly the same borders 612 had originally had with 320. Area code 218 borders 320 to the north, and area code 507 stretches across the southern part of the state.
