Area code 317
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Area code 317 is a North American Numbering Plan area code for Central Indiana. It serves most of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Service Area, including all of Indianapolis/Marion County and portions of the surrounding Hancock, Shelby, Johnson, Morgan, Hendricks, Boone, Rush and Hamilton counties.
[edit] History
Originally, 317 covered the all of Northern and Central Indiana and area code 812 covered Southern Indiana. However, in the first split of the area code system since its inception, Northern Indiana split off as area code 219 in 1948. Eventually, population growth and increased number demand necessitated another split. Beginning on February 1, 1997, with mandatory dialing effective June 28, the greater Indianapolis area retained 317 and the remainder of Central Indiana split off into area code 765.[1]
