Elisabeth Franziska Maria, Archduchess of Austria, Princess of Hungary and Bohemia (17 January 1831 - 14 February 1903).

Elisabeth of Austria was born in Buda, Hungary, the daughter of Archduke Joseph of Austria (1776-1847) and his third wife Maria Dorothea von Württemberg (1797-1855).

Her paternal grandparents were Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria Luisa of Spain. Her maternal grandparents were Ludwig Friedrich Alexander, Prince of Württemberg (1756 - 1817) and Henriette, Princess of Nassau-Weilburg.

Maria Luisa was a daughter of King Charles III of Spain and Maria Amalia of Saxony. Ludwig Friedrich Alexander was a younger son of Friedrich II Eugen, Duke of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He was brother to both Frederick I of Württemberg and Sophia Dorothea of Württemberg, Empress consort of Paul I of Russia.

Her first marriage, on 4 October 1847 in Vienna, was to Archduke Ferdinand Karl Viktor of Austria-Este (1821-1849), by whom she had one daughter, Archduchess Maria Theresia of Austria-Este (1849-1919), wife of King Ludwig III of Bavaria and Jacobite pretender to the thrones of England and Scotland.

Her second marriage, on 18 April 1854, in Vienna, was to Archduke Karl Ferdinand of Austria (1818-1874) by whom she had six children:

  5. Eugen Ferdinand Pius Bernhard Felix Maria Erzherzog v.Österreich (1863-1954)
  6. Maria Eleonora v.Österreich (1864-1864)

Elisabeth died in Vienna. She is buried in Baden bei Wien where there is a street named after her.
