Archdiocese of Esztergom

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The archbishopric of Esztergom was a historical diocese created in 1000 in the Kingdom of Hungary largely on the territory of the Nitrian principality (what is today western and central Slovakia). After World War I, with the fall of the Kingdom of Hungary, its territory was reduced to its present-day extent in modern Hungary and it became Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest on 31 May 1993. The rest became part of the Catholic structures of Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia) after World War I.
