Archbishop of Seoul
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Archbishop of Seoul is the head of the Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul, the Metropolitan see of Korea covering the country's capital, Seoul. As the see is the oldest one in Korea and it is in the capital, the Archbishop of Seoul is often considered to be the Primate of Korea, though the title has not been granted by the Vatican.
The Archdiocese was first created by Pope Gregory XVI in 1831, who designated it as an Apostolic Vicariate of Korea. It was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Seoul in 1911 when the see of Daegu became independent. They were raised to the Archdiocese in 1962.
