Arbuthnot family

Arbuthnott (pronounced Ah-bΛth-n't, accent on second syllable) is the name of a family which stems from the village of Arbuthnott, in Kincardine and Mearns, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Those who live in Scotland generally spell the name "Arbuthnott" while those who live elsewhere spell it "Arbuthnot"; one "t"s outnumber two "t"s by about 10 to 1. The village contains a small kirk in which the Arbuthnott Missal, an important Roman Catholic book was written. The family achieved prominence in India, where Arbuthnot & Co, a mercantile bank was of considerable importance until it collapsed in 1906. The other major company associated with the family is Arbuthnot Latham & Co, a small merchant bank based in London.
