Arbuthnot was a British armed schooner or possibly a privateer brig which was off the coast of America in 1778. We believe she was named after Admiral Marriot Arbuthnot.

  1. According to the London Gazette 17 April 1782.
    • The newspaper contains NOTICES OF THE PAYMENT OF PRIZE MONEY FOR THE CAPTURE OF AMERICAN AND FRENCH VESSELS, AND THE RECAPTURE OF BRITISH VESSELS, AS DIRECTED BY THE ADMIRALTY COURT: Notice to the officers and company of "...HIS MAJESTY'S ARMED BRIG "CABOT,"[1] EDWARD DOD, ESQ., COMMANDER WHO WERE ACTUALLY ON BOARD ON TAKING THE BRIGANTINE "LES DEUX AMIS," AND RECAPTURE OF THE SHIP YORK[2] IN THE YEAR 1778 (IN COMPANY WITH THE "ARBUTHNOT" ARMED SCHOONER) THAT THEY WILL BE PAID THEIR SHARES OF THE SAID PRIZES ON WEDNESDAY THE 24TH OF APRIL AT THE FRENCH HORN IN CRUTCHED-FRIARS STREET, LONDON"
  2. A second source states that ARBUTHNOT was a privateer brig and states that she was the prize of FAIR AMERICAN[3] an American privateer.
  3. A further reference lists the ship in company with others[4].
