Aquinas College, Perth Sport

Aquinas College has a long sporting tradition dating back to 1905 when it became a founding member of the Public Schools Association (PSA). Within the PSA it competes in interschool sports against Christ Church Grammar School, Guildford Grammar School, Hale School, Scotch College, Trinity College and Wesley College.

[edit] Sporting Grounds And Facilities

Redmond Common - This area bounded by the junior school, Gymnasium, Swimming Pool and Redmond Learning Centre is a 'game free' area for the community to enjoy.

Memorial Oval - This is the College's premier oval named in 1951 to commemorate those Aquinians who lost their lives at war. Cricket, Australian Rules Football and Athletics areheld there. The scoreboard was constructed by the Old Aquinians Association and named in honour of Brother C P Foley, the first headmaster on this site at Salter Point. The Scoreboard was renovated in 2006, and is electronic. In 2006, The Churack Pavillion was constructed on the boundary of Memorial oval. it provides change room facilities, viewing area and a function centre.

McMahon Oval - This oval is used for both cricket and Australian rules football and is adjacent to the Kennedy fields. It is named in honour of Brother T A McMahon, Deputy Headmaster from 1938 - 1942 and the first boy from CBC Perth to enter the Christian Brothers.

Lynch Oval - This oval is below Memorial Oval and is used for socer, cricket, an general purpose training activities. It is named in honour of Brother J H Lynch who was a member of staff from 1942 - 1947 and from 1940 - 1954. He was instrumental in working with groups of fathers and boys in the development of this land for sport.

Clery Park - This large area which contains carparks, ovals and fields is named in honour of Brother Brian Clery, who has been on staff at Aquinas since 1986. Brother Clery continues to work in the area of spiritiuality as Assistant Director of Spirituality in the College.

Redmond Ovals (1 & 2) - These two ovals are named in memory of Brother Redmond, they are located on Clery park, and are the College's two rugby ovals.

Scott Field - This field is named in honour of Alphonsus Scott who attended CBC Perth from 1921 - 1927 and maintained his link with Aquinas in his capacity as Secretary, Vice-President and President of the Old Boys between 1929 and 1941. He was instrumental in establishing the Old Aquinians Hockey Club in 1932. Scott Field is located on Clery Park and is used for Soccer.

Keaney Oval - Brother Paul Keaney was a long time supporter of Aquinas, being responsible for the purchase of the Salter Point site, whilst in his role as Principal at Clontarf College. Keaney oval is located on Clery Park and is used for Australian Rules Football and soccer.

Kennedy Fields (1 & 2) - These two fields are named in honour of the St John-Kennedy family, long time supporters of Aquinas hockey. This site is home to the Mike Kinsella Hockey Pavillion, which was jointly sponsored by the Old Aquinians Hockey Club and the College. It was opened in 1972 and named to honour Mike Kinsella who was instrumental in the development of the project.

Brother NN Wilson Rowing Shed - This facility is on the shores of the Canning River and honours Brother Niel Wilson, who was on staff at the college from 1959 - 1970 and from 1988 - 1997.

Aquinas has a strong history in PSA Athletics, winning the Alcock Shield 51 times since 1905. Aquinas has won the Alcock cup as many times as all of the other schools combined. Recent performances are as follows;

Basketball was introduced as a PSA sport in 1980. The basketball trophy was introduced in 1980 to commemorate the long service to Christ Church Grammar School and the PSA of Mr A F Blackwood, deputy headmaster from 1966-1983. Aquinas has won the trophy 9 times. Aquinas has won the last 5 years running. Recent performances are as follows;

Badminton was introduced as a PSA sport in 2002 and is the youngest PSA Sport. The badminton cup was named the Brother Kelly Cup in honour of Brother J. Kelly, influential headmaster of Trinity College. Aquinas has never won the Brother Kelly Cup. Recent performances are as follows;

At First XI level Aquinas competes for the Darlot Cup. The Darlot Cup was introduced in 1905. Aquinas has won the Darlot Cup 26 times. Recent performances are as follows;

Cross country was introduced as a PSA sport in 1980. The Moyes Cup was introduced in 1980 to commemorate the the long service of Mr. P M Moyes, headmaster of Christ Church Grammar School from 1951-1981. Aquinas has won the Moyes Cup ten times. Recent performances are as follows;

Competition at the 1st XVIII level of Football is for the Alcock Cup. Australian Rules Football has been a PSA Sport since 1905. Aquinas has won the Alcock Cup 51 times. Recent performances are as follows;

Hockey has been a PSA sport since 1959, the Hockey cup was named the Ray House Hockey cup in honour of Mr. Ray House for long service to the PSA as Delegate and Deputy Headmaster of Christ Church Grammar School. Aquinas has won the cup fifteen times, last winning it in 1998 (equal 1st with Scotch). Recent performances are as follows;

Aquinas competes at the Head of the River rowing regatta for both the Hamer Cup (overall points) and the Head of the River Cup (for the 1st VIII crew).

On the final day of the rowing season, all PSA Schools attend the head of the rover rowing regatta, the first VIII crew's from all of the schools compete for the Head Of The River title. Aquinas has won the Head Of The River 36 times since the PSA was established in 1905. Recent performances are as follows;

The Hamer Cup was introduced in 1983, and is awarded to the school which scores the highest aggregate points in rowing. It is named after Mr. C A Hamer who was headmaster of Wesley from 1964 - 1983. Aquinas' recent performances are as follows;

The rugby cup was introduced in 1963, two years after rugby became a PSA sport. It is named after Brother M F Redmond, teacher and sportsmaster at Aquinas for many years. Aquinas has won the cup four times, last winning it in the year 2000. Recent performances are as follows;

The soccer trophy, which was introduced in 1987 when soccer became a PSA sport is named after Mr. D A Lawe Davis, headmaster of Guildford from 1957-1978. Aquinas has won the trophy twice, in 1995 (equal 1st) and 2002. Recent performances are as follows;

Swimming has taken place at PSA level since 1904. In 1990 the swimming trophy, which had been in existance since 1923 was named the Dr. K G Tregonning Cup in honour of the headmaster of Hale from 1967-1988. Aquinas has won the event 15 times. Aquinas' Last win was in 1994. Recent performances are as follows;

The PSA tennis cup is named after Mr W R Corr, a long-serving teacher and tennis coach at Hale School. Aquinas has won the PSA tennis ten times since it was introduced as a PSA sport in 1963. Recent performances are as follows;

The Volleyball trophy is known as the Brother Carrigg Shield. Aquinas has won the shield seven times since it volleyball was introduced into the PSA in 2000, Aquinas is the only school to have won the trophy. Recent performances are as follows;

The Waterpolo trophy is called the Dickinson Shield. Aquinas has won the trophy eleven times since waterpolo became a PSA sport in 1992. Recent performances are as follows;

Aquinas is also involved in non-PSA sports which include golf and surfing. The junior school also runs sailing, softball and squash programs which are not part of the PSA sporting competition.
